Mental Health and Wellbeing

Mental health is an important part of everyone's wellbeing. We believe it is essential that every child has someone they can talk to if they are feeling anxious, worried, upset, or sad.

Each year, the school celebrates Children's Mental Health Week, raising awareness of the importance of positive mental wellbeing. We have also welcomed external organisations, to work with both pupils and staff, providing practical strategies to support emotional health and resilience.

The school is fortunate to have a trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) who works with individual pupils and small groups. ELSA support covers a wide range of areas, including:

  • Social skills development
  • Understanding and managing emotions
  • Bereavement support
  • Social and therapeutic stories
  • Anger management
  • Building self-esteem and confidence
  • Friendship skills
  • Solution-focused approaches and counselling skills

These interventions help children develop the emotional awareness, resilience, and coping strategies needed to support their mental health and wellbeing.

In addition, the school works closely with an Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) from the NHS Mental Health Support Team. The EMHP supports identified children and their families by providing early intervention for mild to moderate emotional and mental health difficulties, such as anxiety, low mood, worries, and emotional regulation. They work collaboratively with parents, carers, and school staff to help children develop positive coping strategies and improve their emotional wellbeing.

We also teach yoga and meditation, enabling pupils to develop lifelong techniques for relaxation, mindfulness, and emotional regulation.

If you have any concerns about your child's mental health or emotional wellbeing, please contact Mrs Stone or Mrs Burden, who will be happy to offer advice and support.

We can also signpost parents and carers to appropriate services should they require support with their own mental health and wellbeing.
